Masahiro Sakurai revealed that there are no current plans for a Smash Bros.

In a recent interview, Masahiro Sakurai discussed the future of Super Smash Bros., including the possibility of a Smash Ultimate sequel.
Released as a holiday title for Nintendo in 2018, Super Smash Bros. became a huge success for the company. Many fans have considered the game to be the pinnacle of the franchise, as it brings together every fighter from every installment in the series. After the huge success of the fighting game on Nintendo Switch, many wonder what the next step will be Super Smash Bros. and its creator Masahiro Sakurai.
Luckily, it looks like gamers finally have some answers. Recently, Masahiro Sakurai discussed the prospect of a sequel to Super Smash Bros.. In an email interview with IGN, he revealed that he’s not currently working on a new game in the series. Furthermore, he said that there are no active plans to make a new season.
In addition to revealing that a Super Smash Bros. the game wasn’t in development, he warned fans to stop assuming there would be another entry. “It’s best not to assume that there will always be another,” he said. According to Sakurai, it is difficult to imagine where the classic series could progress in the future. With 89 playable fighters in Smash Ultimate, it would be a difficult task to create a new game that includes more fighters. This is a problem Sakurai acknowledges, as he believes that the sequel cannot keep the current roster of characters while adding new ones.
He also talked about the challenge of trying to innovate the formula for success Smash Ultimate. “If we try to keep things fresh by switching to a different genre or changing a lot of directions, it’s no longer the same. Super Smash Bros. game,” he said. Also, Sakurai mentioned that although the size of the previous game was an important factor in success on Nintendo Switch, it also keeps fans’ expectations of a potential sequel very high. Sakurai admits that this range will be “a tough act to follow.”
Despite these comments from Sakurai, he does not rule out the possibility of returning to direct another project in the future. He revealed that if Nintendo approached him about making a sequel, he would “start thinking about it.” Meanwhile, the author of Super Smash Bros. says he’s considered moving into game making. “I have the ability to go down a different path,” he revealed. He explained that he wants to maintain “an open mind” about his future, as there are other ways he can stay involved in the industry.
This news from Sakurai comes as Nintendo recently released a balance patch for Smash Ultimate. As the final update to the fighting game, it saw 24 fighters receive the changes. Only a few characters that have been balanced are Link, Inkling, Mewtwo, and Ryu.
