Marvel Studios Plans In House ‘Animation Branch and Mini Studio’

Ahead of the launch of the animated series “What If…?”, top Marvel CEO Victoria Alonso said future animation projects will be produced domestically.

Alonso confirms company’s commitment to animation in once sat down recently with Variety’s Marc Malkin during this year’s NALIP Media Summit. An executive producer on recent popular Marvel movies like “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” Alonso is eager to see what the animation capabilities could mean for MCU.

“We will have the animation branch and the mini-studio, and there will be more from there,” said Alonso. “We were very excited about animation, it was my first love.”

This announcement was made ahead of the premiere of the animated anthology series “What if…? , Disney+’s next Marvel show in August. “What if…?” reimagine key moments from the MCU movies to create a new multiverse in which fan favorites like Peggy Carter, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, and Thor collide.

Directed by Marvel storyboard artist Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as lead scriptwriter, the series was created by Australian animation company Flying Bark Productions and Canadian costume Squeeze Animation, both of which are not owned by Marvel. Alonso’s comment seems to suggest that in the future, all animated projects from Marvel will be produced domestically.

The new series features beloved MCU voice talents like Josh Brolin as Thor, Michael B. Jordan as Kilmonger, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. “What if…?” also facilitated new talent to join the MCU, including the addition of Jeffrey Wright as Uatu/The Watcher.

As streaming brings endless possibilities to the MCU, Alonso highlighted the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of characters who may still play supporting roles, such as Wanda and Vision.

“When we had the opportunity to be a part of this world of streaming, we were super excited because suddenly we were actually able to give our fans more than a quarter of a page or three exciting moves. “

“What if…?” premieres on Disney+ on August 11.
