Manga Urusei Yatsura to Launch New Anime in 2022

The new series will air on Fuji TV’s Noitamina program channel sometime next year.


The famous Rumiko Takahashi Urusei Yatsura the manga will receive a new TV anime adaptation in the spring of 2022. The announcement was made in a New Year’s greeting page advertisement, part of the January 1 edition of the daily Sankei Shimbun.

The new series will be broadcast on Fuji TV’s Noitamina program channel along with other channels. The famous programming slot has been the home of countless popular titles over the years, including Eden of the East, Tatami . Galaxy, Children on the slope, Deleted, and many more.

Urusei Yatsura Be the first serial series Takahashi worked on. The manga ran in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine from 1978-1987, amassing 34 volumes collected during its run. Urusei Yatsura was one of the most successful and influential series of its time, inspiring other popular romantic comedies such as Love Hina and Tenchi Muyo!, with more than 35 million copies in circulation.

The original anime series aired from 1981-1986. It was produced by Kitty Films, with Studio Pierrot handling the animation until the 106th episode and Studio Deen taking over until the end. Renowned director Mamoru Oshii directed the series while it was being animated at Pierrot, and was eventually succeeded by Kazuo Yamazaki after transferring to Deen. Oshii is famous as a director Patlabor 2: The Movie and the years 1995 Ghost in the shell. Yamazaki has worked on countless projects over the years, most notably Mobile Suit Gundam, City Hunter, and a bunch of other Takahashi, Maison Ikkou. ONE series ran from 1983-1991, with several OVAs released throughout the mid-80s to early 90s.

Takahashi produced a number of successful manga throughout her career. While still working Urusei Yatsura, she started working with her Masion Ikkou series. The hit series about coming of age appeared from 1980-1987 in Big Comic Spirits magazine. Other notable series include Ranma and Inuyasha, both are extremely popular manga series with long-running anime adaptations.

VIZ Media publishes the series in English as a 2-in-1 omnibus edition, while Discotek Media recently re-released the series.
