Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager for the remainder of the season.

The 63-year-old has agreed to take over at Old Trafford until the end of the 2021-22 season, after which he will serve as an advisor for another two years. Although United have reached a full agreement with Lokomotiv Moscow over Rangnick’s move to the Premier League, they have so far not completed the formalities that come with securing the German player’s work permit.

In the meantime, Michael Carrick will stay at the helm and may be on the bench for Thursday’s Premier League game against Arsenal. However, that was only a matter of time when Rangnick took command of the club.

Rangnick said: “I am delighted to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season for the club. “The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience. All my efforts over the next six months will be aimed at helping these players reach their full potential, both individually. and most importantly as a team.

“In addition, I look forward to supporting the club’s long-term goals on a consultative basis.”

As a consultant, Rangnick will be expected to modernize a club whose style of play and approach to recruitment sometimes seems outdated in the modern game with former coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done little to convey the general philosophy of football during his three-year reign.

No one can accuse Rangnick of a lack of ideas on how to play the game and United are expected to switch to a high-pressure approach that the veteran coach has helped define as the dominant play in the Bundesliga.

United’s director of football John Murtagh said: “Ralf is one of the most respected coaches and innovators in European football. “He is our number one candidate for an interim management position, reflecting the invaluable leadership and skills he will bring from nearly four decades of experience in management and coaching. .

“Everybody at the club is looking forward to working with him for the upcoming season, and then two more years in his mentoring role.”
