Man fires shots near US Capitol, dies after crashing his car into barricade – National

A man died in an apparent suicide early Sunday after driving his car into a barricade near the US Capitol and firing shots in the air, police said.

While the man was getting out of the crashed car, a blaze erupted on East Capitol Street and Second Street just after 4 a.m., US Capitol Police said.

“At this time, it does not appear that the man was targeting members of Congress who are on recess, and it does not appear that officers fired their guns,” Capitol Police said.

Police said the man then fired several shots in the air along East Capitol Street. When police responded and approached, the man shot himself, police said. Nobody else was hurt.

The death is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, who did not immediately release the man’s identity or details of his motives.
