A new round of investment funding for Mainframe Industries has brought the total raised for its cloud-based MMORPG to 20.3 million euros (about $22 million).

New amount raised (as reported by GamesIndustry.biz) is aiming to develop “cloud-native MMO”. The recent rumors were followed by explicit confirmations that the game has a working title and a publishing deal under Microsoft’s management. None of these details have been confirmed by the Mainframe (or Microsoft, for that matter), but those rumors and new funding seem to be moving in a positive direction.

On the Mainframe page, their listed goal states that the studio is developing “a persistent living world that people will call their home for years and hopefully decades,” noting that the game The game will be playable via PC, console and phone in some form. While online and cloud-based games are not new, there is potential in establishing an entirely MMO within this framework. Not too long ago, even wanting to crossplay was non-existent in most games. It seems that after $8.3 million initial round secured last year, this new level of funding means that investors are sharing in that activism in Mainframe’s ongoing work.

The round is more than double the first round of funding led by its previous major investor, Andreessen Horowitz, with new investors joining, like Twitch co-founders Kevin Lin and Dreamhaven , former president of Blizzard, Mike Morhaime’s new company.

To know more about Mainframe’s corporate philosophy and overall goals the company is adopting to develop its cloud MMO, see Mainframe page. Working title, Pax Dei, seems to have been confirmed last month by Chris Kohler, but there’s no word on anything final yet. Almost all the details are completely unfinished at this point. Are you ready for a full cloud-native MMORPG?
