Magic: Collection will return to other old planes after Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty
In Magic: Gathering, each set’s new mechanics are designed to reflect the world in which the set takes place. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty stands out from most series going back to the old plane because of how drastically Kamigawa has changed. Usually, planes go through at least a little change between visits, with protagonists from those worlds coming and going, but Kamigawa is completely different. What was once a world based on medieval Japanese history and culture, as well as Shinto mythology, is now partly a cyberpunk society in the distant future. Kamigawa’s technology has advanced greatly are from Magic: Gathering went there for the first time, but some parts of the plane still cling to the spiritual roots of the world. Magic: Gathering can get bold new mechanics out of the old plane if the Wizards of the Coast first pass second in the lore of that world. It doesn’t need to rewrite them from scratch; it simply considers the central theme of each of those planes, then introduces new protagonists or establishes contrasts with the original concept of the plane. With the help of that contrast, it is possible to use old mechanics in surprising new ways, thus possibly inspiring entirely new mechanics.

The new plane is certainly useful in finding new mechanisms that could redefine the way Magic: Gathering drama.
