Former President Donald Trump found himself slowly drawing backlash from his supporters this weekend after revealing that he had recently received a booster shot against COVID-19.
Trump’s stepped-up announcement came during Sunday’s final stop on “Historical Tour” which he co-mentioned with disgraced former Fox News star Bill O’Reilly. The tour, which Trump has promised will bring “big crowds,” so far beset by average attendance and empty seats.
At one point in the event, as reported by Newsweek, Trump brags that a COVID-19 vaccine was developed by his administration during Operation Warp Speed. Calling the effort “historic”, the former president took personal credit for saving “tens of millions of lives” around the world.
“We should take that into account, and you play right in their hands [when you doubt it],” He also gives public presentations.
Vaccine hesitancy among Trump supporters has had a real impact, as data show that counties that voted heavily for Trump in 2020 “are nearly three times more likely to die from COVID-19 than people living in areas that are now President Biden” as of May 2021 This is almost entirely due to those counties’ low vaccination rates.
While boasting about his administration’s role in vaccine development, Trump simultaneously expressed his opposition to the vaccine mandate, drawing cheers from MAGA attendees . “If you don’t want to take it, you shouldn’t be forced to take it, no duty at all,” he declared.
However, the cheers suddenly turned to boos and jeers as both he and O’Reilly confirmed that they were fully vaccinated and boosted.
“Don’t, don’t, don’t,” Trump immediately responded, pointing to the side of the arena where groans seemed to come from.
“It’s okay, it’s a very small group up there,” the two-time impeached former president later insisted.
Trump’s assertion that he received a booster shot comes just months after he protested the need for a booster shot. Transparent an interview in August with pro-Trump Fox host Maria Bartiromo, Trump — who was mixed messages constantly for saleto Republicans about the vaccine — was forced to scrap the boost campaign.
“That sounds like a monetization operation for Pfizer to me, okay?!” Trump roared. “Think about the money involved… the whole thing is just crazy. It doesn’t – you wouldn’t think you would need a booster. You know, when these first came out, they were good for life. ”
And in an interview in September with The Wall Street Journal, the 75-year-old former president suggested he wouldn’t get the supplement, saying “it’s probably not for me” and that he’s “in good shape from that point of view.”
