In spite of Los Angeles Dodgers expected to reach post-season, they are in need of help in rotation. Trevor Bauer is on administrative leave because he is being investigated for domestic violence allegations. Dustin May lost during the season due to Tommy John surgery. Clayton Kershaw sidelined with forearm inflammation, and there is still no sign of how long he will be sidelined. The Dodgers need help with the rotation.
That help can come from an unexpected place. Cole Hamels had his practice session for interested teams on Friday and the Dodgers are expected to be counted among them.
Cole Hamels could be the answer to the Los Angeles Dodgers
No wonder Hamels is still not crowned at this point. He featured in just one game last season due to injury, allowing three runs with three hits and walking in his 3.1 innings, beating two beaters. A three-legged injury delayed his start of the season and a shoulder problem that occurred during one of his outings kept him sidelined for the rest of the year.
If Hamels is healthy, he could be a solid piece for any team. He was a horse during his first 14 years in the majors, passing the 200 innings mark 9 times and not throwing less than 130 innings in any given year. Four times All Star in that span, he has established himself as one of the better pitchers in the game.
At 37, it’s fair to wonder how much Hamels has left in the tank. His velocity during his training is not really impressive. However, he has a great knowledge of how to pitch and the ability to spot his throws when needed. His longstanding understanding and knowledge of the repertoire can overcome those velocity problems.
Hamels would be someone a competitive team could look at. Considering that it is already mid-July and it will take time before he completes his normal workload, he may not be ready to become a weapon until September at the earliest. But if he can hit 100 appearances by October, any team will be pleased. For a team such as the Dodgers, where once an impressive deep shoot time is now a question mark, Hamels could be part of the answer.
Cole Hamels appeared fit during Friday’s workout. He could be an answer to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ touted questions.
