Simpler puzzles can often be solved by reasoning on only one row (or one column) at a given time, in order to identify as many cells and spaces on that row as possible. Then try another row (or column), until no more rows contain unknown cells.
Some of the more difficult puzzles may also require some form of “what if?” reasoning includes more than one row (or column). This works on finding inconsistencies: When a cell cannot be a box, because some other cell will generate an error, it will definitely be a space. And vice versa. Advanced solvers can sometimes search deeper than the first question “what if?” reasoning. However, it takes a lot of time to make some progress.
