After the overthrow and killing of Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, oil-rich Libya has spent much of the past decade divided between rival governments – one located in the capital, Tripoli, and the other in the east of the country. Each side in the civil war also has the support of mercenaries and foreign forces from Turkey, Russia and Syria and other regional powers.
