New trailer for Netflixdisaster comedy Don’t look up is here, and despite the sci-fi premise, it feels painfully relevant. The new film is the latest from Oscar-winning filmmaker Adam McKay and features an all-star cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill and many more.
NetflixThe book’s official synopsis reads: “Two astronomers in the media to warn humanity of a killer comet heading toward Earth. Response from a distracted world: Meh.” The new one Don’t look up intro video features DiCaprio and Lawrence as astronomers, desperate to warn the world about a deadly comet. Despite their best efforts, they quickly found that those in power, including the President (Streep) and her administration, didn’t really care.
After a failed attempt to warn those in power, the two astronomers decided to reveal the information to the public by appearing on a morning talk show. The servers, however, are played to hilarious effect by actress Cate Blanchett and comedian Tyler Perry, get even less attention than the President. The rest of the trailer shows DiCaprio and Lawrence’s astronomers becoming more and more desperate to convince the White House and the public to act before all life on earth is wiped out.
Don’t look up Written and directed by McKay, filmmaker behind comedies like Anchorman and Talladega night, as well as more recent award-winning films like The Big Short and Evil behavior. McKay’s more recent films are known for combining real-world issues and politics with his brand of humor, and Don’t look up seems to be the latest in that trend.
Sadly, a movie about an impending disaster that no one cares about feels too appropriate. It is not difficult to see the allegory of climate change in Don’t look up and the utter lack of urgency from those in power as a total indictment of our leaders’ inability (and lack of desire) to respond to a global disaster. It’s certainly easy to imagine this scenario playing out the way it’s described in the trailer. Even the tagline at the beginning of the trailer says that the new movie is “Based on real events that haven’t happened yet.”
Either way, Don’t look up will serve as a reminder of current crises, while providing good laughs and maybe even sniffing too close to home. New movie also featured Timothee Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Rob Morgan and Mark Rylance.
Don’t look up premieres in theaters on December 10 and begins streaming exclusively on Netflix on December 24, 2021.
