Legendary Mangaka Junji Ito to be cast as voice character in anime Uzumaki

Legendary horror manga Junji Ito will voice a character in his upcoming anime adaptation Uzumaki story. The announcement was made on the Twitter account for the anime project this past Saturday.

The Twitter account released a video teasing Ito’s involvement in the project, showcasing him in the recording studio. The video comes with a disclaimer stating that the character Ito is voicing has yet to be revealed.

The four-episode mini-series will premiere in October 2022. Studio Drive is producing the anime, with Mushishi and Metal City Detroit Director Hiroshi Nagahama is directing the project. Composer Colin Stetson of Montreal will be in charge of the series’ music. Stetson has collaborated with countless artists over the years, including Arcade Fire, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, BadBadNotGood, and many more. Stetson also composed music for Ari Aster’s Hereditary, contributing to Red Dead Redemption 2 score and will contribute music to Netflix coming Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie.


The Uzumaki The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits magazine from 1998 to 1999, accumulating three collected volumes. The series is one of the recognized Ito and popular, fan-favorite works. It was nominated for the Eisner Award in the category “Best Edition of Foreign Documentary in the United States” in 2003, and has been well received by critics over the years.

A live-action film adaptation was released in 2000 in Japan. The Ukraninan-born director Higuchinsky is said to have tried to make the 90-minute film as faithful to the original manga as possible. The film received mixed reception, with rave reviews ozone of the movie. Uzumaki was issued as a double invoice with Tomie: Playback, a film adaptation of the popular Ito manga.


VIZ Media licensed the Uzumaki manga in English. The series originally published in Pulp magazine is now defunct. The anime will premiere on Adult Swim’s Toonami channel before being released in Japan.
