Legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins knighted by Prince Charles

Roger Deakins, the legendary cinematographer of Skyfall and several other films, was knighted by Prince Charles at Windsor Castle.

Sir Roger Deakins is the 3rd most nominated cinematographer in Oscars history, having been nominated 15 times and two of them went to Denis Villeneuve. Blade Runner 2049 and Sam Mendes’ 1917. Now, the legendary cinematographer has been knighted by Prince Charles at Windsor Castle on February 1.

Deakins absolutely dominated the 2010s, receiving nominations in every year except 2011, 2016 and 2018. He has credits in contemporary. classics such as Skyfall, Prisoner, Uninterruptedand Sicarioamong others.

In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, Deakins said, “Knightship is an incredible honor that must be shared with my crew and collaborators. They are the reason I was able to do what I did. It’s a great recognition that we all share.” Deakins was appointed CBE in 2013 and in the New Year’s Title 2021 it was announced that he would be knighted. He was joined by his wife, digital process expert James Ellis Deakins, who took to their joint Instagram to joke that even in such an environment, Sir Deakins was still looking at the chandelier and making comments about the different color temperatures and their contrast against daylight in large windows and what they should do with the light in their current film. The two co-host a podcast called Team Deakins Podcast, where they have conversations with various people in the film industry.


Sir Deakins is currently preparing to work on the British set of Shawn Mendes Light Empire. The project is described as a love story set around a beautiful old cinema on the South Coast of England in the 1980s. Mendes is producing the film with Pippa Harris through Neal Street Productions. Light Empire marked Mendes’ first solo trip as a screenwriter. So far only Olivia Colman has been announced to star in it. This is Mendes and Deakin’s third collaboration after By Leonardo DiCaprio Revolutionary Road and Skyfall.

Deakins is one of the most beautifully decorated and Highly rated cinematographers ever, so any accolades he adds to his tally are well-deserved. He has also received five BAFTA Awards and five Association of Cinematographers competitive awards, along with the 2011 ASC Lifetime Achievement Award.
