Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), actress and former Scientologist Leah Remini, and new York magazine and HuffPost contributor Yashar Ali are fighting. The topic? Top Gun: Maverick.
As reported by The Hill, Kinzinger praised the film as “amazing” in a recent tweet, prompting Ali to warn against praising top Scientologist Tom Cruise’s new film — even in such innocuous terms.
“No kidding when I say this tweet is being shown to Scientologists as an example of Tom Cruise’s excellence and for being the most dedicated Scientologist,” Ali wrote. “Stuff like this, especially from elected officials, makes Scientologists who have doubts reconsider.”
Kinzinger responded with a quote tweet: “WHAT??”
Leah Remini, who left the Church of Scientology in 2013 and has since released three seasons of her documentaries Leah Remini: Scientology and its aftermath, also soon jumped in: “Rather than investigating Scientology for its abuses, its intimidation of IRS officials, among other things, promote your deputy’s project,” she wrote. “I have it.”
Scientology founder and science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard first announced “Project Celebrity” in 1955, an initiative to normalize his religion that recruited A-listers like Kirstie Alley and John Travolta.
In a recent investigation for The Daily Beast, which explored Cruise’s role as a Scientology mascot over the years, reporter Tony Ortega wrote: “Tom Cruise’s worth to Scientology is not as a leader, but as an ornament. That’s what celebrities have always been: symbols. But he is the main celebrity and an incredibly important symbol for the church.”
As the film enchants viewers worldwide, Ortega writes, Cruise’s star will once again eclipse his history with the church. “His popularity will be a tremendous boost for individual Scientologists who will see success Top Gun: Maverick as a vindication of Scientology, even if the film has nothing to do with it.”
Given that Top Gun: Maverick Already delivered the biggest weekend premiere of Cruise’s career at the box office, it seems anyone hoping to have a genuine conversation about the religion they espouse will have to wait again.
