The New York Film Critics Circle raised hopes for some of this year’s best-received works, including several examples that were frustratingly excluded from the Oscars conversation. The organization, among the most prestigious regional critical groups known for its early promotion of worthy candidates, has gone with Drive my car, the three-hour masterpiece from Ryusuke Hamaguchi, for the top best picture award and find plenty of opportunities to spread the wealth.
Eg: Lady Gaga. Gucci house not the prime example of a critic, landing in the ’50s to ’60s on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, but Gaga has scored all over the table — and as i wrote when the movie came out, she emerged as a best actress contender right away. The NYCFC giving her a seal of approval feels important to me, even if they often make it difficult for actors who don’t make it to the Oscars night, like last year. Sidney Flanigan (wonderful thing Never Rarely Sometimes Always). This is an impactful performance in a movie that many of these voters disliked; Oscar voters can certainly ignore similar general controversies, too, can’t they?
After The power of the dog did not qualify at the Gotham Awards on Monday and was completely vacated by the National Review Board, it received a huge, much needed (and somewhat expected) boost today , with the first announced award going to a supporting actor Kodi Smit-McPhee, a strong contender for the Oscars in the well-off category. (He joins others in good positions but hardly guaranteed, in CODA‘NS Troy Kotsur and Belfast‘NS Ciaran Hinds, to win this week.) Then Benedict Cumberbatch won best actor, potentially the first of many critic awards the star will receive for the best work of his career on Netflix Western. And afterward Jane Campion received the award for best director. She has a clear path to her first directorial Oscar, and this is a nice next step after winning the equivalent in Venice.
Wow, Kirsten Dunst unable to complete that efficient scan for PowerThe top contenders, with the Supporting Actress award going to excel on stage instead Kathryn Hunter, Who will congratulate when the three witches in Joel Coen‘NS Macbeth’s Tragedy. The road to her Oscar nod is still fraught with difficulties, but someone can hope this gives her visibility for wider consideration. (She definitely earned it.) And in the movie script, Paul Thomas Anderson‘NS Licorice pizza catch up momentum is driven by NBR with a win in the very category in which it has the best chance of winning an Oscar. Two other movies that could greet a very good week: West story won the cinematography award for Janusz Kaminski after premiering the series on Monday, while after dominating the Gotham Awards on Monday, Maggie Gyllenhaal get the best first movie for Daughter is gone.
Other winners include World’s ugliest person (VF critic Richard LawsonBest Foreign Language Film of the Year); Mitchells vs. the Machines in the best cartoon; and Escape, which qualifies in both of those categories, attracts a different Award for best documentary. Having also won the equivalent of Gotham earlier this week, it looks like the doc could be where the hybrid contender makes its most successful accolades.
