A security guard who worked for a California news station died on Saturday, days after he was shot by armed robbers while protecting a news group covering an armed robbery. recently.
Former police officer Kevin Nishita is protecting the KRON4 crew on Wednesday when they mentioned a recent Oakland robbery. When someone tried to steal their camera gear, Nishita tried to block the attacker but was shot in the lower abdomen.
He was taken to hospital in critical condition, while a bystander was treated for a shrapnel wound.
Police described the attack as “an extremely violent week” in Oakland and urged those with knowledge of the incident to move forward. The station is also offering a $32,500 reward for any information leading to an arrest.
“This senseless loss of life was caused by another violent criminal act in the Bay Area,” said KRON4 Vice President Jim Rose. “We hope that offering a reward will help lead to the arrest of those responsible so they can face justice for this terrible tragedy.”
Local shops in the area have repeatedly employed security guards while on duty at the scene due to a series of thieves targeting the camera equipment, ABC7 reported.
Businesses in the Bay Area also increase security after a string of famous robberies, including thefts at a Louis Vuitton store in the famous Union Square and a Nordstrom in Walnut Creek.
Police believe the recent string of robberies may be related, and San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin said his office has charge nine people with felonies related to theft.
Nishita previously worked with the Star Protection Agency, one of the largest private security firms on the West Coast, and was honored by the Alameda Sheriff’s Office for his service as a police officer.
KRON4 reporters and others who knew Nishita and others who knew Nishita, praised his kindness and condemned the senseless act of violence that took his life.
“He died protecting one of ours, a colleague reported the very violence that took his life,” Mark Neerman, local branch manager of KPIX5 said, with which Nishita worked before. “I know you will join me in sending condolences to his family and thanking Kevin for standing up for all of us.”
KRON4 reporter Will Tran tweeted about his “broken heart” and remember Nishita as a friend. “I’m so scared for me. I fear for my colleagues,” he wrote. “He was our friend and now he’s gone.”
