Kevin Feige Confirms Charlie Cox Return As Daredevil

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige just gave MCU fans a holiday helluva: he confirmed — with special candlelight! —That’s it Charlie Cox is Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe… if/when the fearless man shows up in Marvel Studios something or other.

News coming through Cinemablend, who somehow delivered a definitive answer from one of the most loyal producers in Hollywood. Here’s what Feige had to say: “If you get to see Daredevil in the upcoming movies, Charlie Cox, yes, will be the actor playing Daredevil. Where we see it, how we see it, when we see it, still has to be seen.”

This news is, of course, dramatic. To recap for those who don’t spend their days in Marvel rumors and behind-the-scenes plots, Charlie Cox played Matt Murdock in Netflix. Marvel’s Daredevil live-action series. The show ran for three seasons — and was quite quickly canceled after Disney announced that Marvel Studios would be making live-action shows for Disney+ starring actors from the Marvel movies. What are the main differences between Netflix shows and Disney+ shows? Netflix’s lineup is produced by Marvel Television (supervised by Jeph Loeb) and Disney+ movies and shows are produced by Marvel Studios (which is Kevin Feige’s realm). That’s why this news is so big. Here’s Kevin Feige honoring a casting decision he didn’t actually have a hand in — a casting decision made by another, now defunct production company.

This comment about Charlie Cox playing Daredevil in a potential MCU movie or show could lead to speculation about some niche. Let’s start walking down those alleys!

First — that means the rumors that Matt Murdock might appear in Spider-Man: There’s no way home suddenly sounds more logical. That movie (which was co-produced by Sony because nothing with Marvel is simple) re-listed some of the actors who appeared in the previous installment. Spiderman films not produced by Marvel Studios (Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Octopus Doctor, Jamie Foxx’s Elektro, etc.). There is speculation that Charlie Cox’s handsome arm appears in the first season There is no way home intro video, but that theory has been debunked.

Second – that means Daredevil’s civilian identity, Matt Murdock, could appear in the upcoming Disney+ movie She is heavy live-action series starring Tatiana Maslany. She-Hulk and Daredevil are two of Marvel’s most senior attorneys and have argued in the courtroom a few times before. If Daredevil doesn’t appear in Spider-Man: There’s no way home, afterward She is heavy is a possibility.

Hawkeye episode 3 - Maya Lopez Uncle Kingpin

Tuesday — Feige’s comments all but confirm that Echo’s mysterious “Uncle” from last week Hawk Eye episode “Echoes” is the Kingpin of Vincent D’Onofrio. If Feige is willing to bring back Cox as Daredevil, then he will definitely bring back D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk. In fact, it is not out of the question that Daredevil can appear in the upcoming Disney movie + Echo series. After all, Echo is out on the pages of Daredevil and mostly Daredevil support players. Her debut in Hawk Eye feels like nothing at all (though Echo and Hawkeye are connected in the comics via the Ronin armor, so not total from where appear). Since Echo is getting her own series, it makes sense for her “uncle” Kingpin to have a lead role to play — and the same goes for Daredevil.

Fourth – if Cox is the MCU’s Daredevil, it’s entirely possible that Feige feels the same way about some of the other actors in the Netflix TV series. This would be great. Netflix shows all have their problems in common, but casting has never been one of them. Correct, even Finn Jones!

This will be absolutely great for the MCU as the franchise goes on, even if many of their A-list characters are retired. While Marvel Studios has a great track record of turning unknown Marvel characters into blockbuster icons, the Netflix heroes are a bunch of previously unremarkable main Marvel characters. The addition of Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Elektra, Punisher — I could go on! —Entering the MCU opens a lot of doors for storytelling.

So this is a big deal — and not just for Daredevil fans! This opens up the possibility for the MCU at the right time. Now, everyone bet when you think Charlie Cox will be back…
