The stars of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills continue to be frighteningly problematic this season. And at this point I’m starting to think there’s an unspoken competition going on among the cast to see who can make the most racist comment.
First we had newcomer Diana Jenkins insulting black content creators and lecturing Haitian-American castmate Garcelle Beauvais on how much she’s allegedly helped the island of Haiti on Instagram. Lisa Rinna wreaked her own havoc when she stepped out to defend Jenkins and every white housewife accused of racism on the show (while also throwing punches at them Real Housewives of Dubai‘s multiracial cast). Sutton Stracke has been accused of making racist remarks by a former friend of her daughter’s. And Erika Jayne notoriously cursed Beauvais’ teenage black son earlier this season – which several white cast members found hilarious.
Now, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Fan favorite Kathy Hilton has come under fire after “mistaking” Grammy-winning actress Lizzo for the character Precious, played by Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe, from Lee Daniels’ 2009 film of the same name See what’s happening live.
On Wednesday night’s episode, host Andy Cohen played a game with Hilton called “Will Kathy Know Them?” apparently based on Hilton’s tendency to confuse cast members with each other Beverly Hills. During her first season, she famously mistook Beauvais for her (white) half-sister, Kyle Richards. And in a recent episode, she claimed she had previously met a friend of Sheree Zampino’s who is black, though Zampino claimed otherwise.
Likewise, the producers made the very risky, and ultimately bad, decision to include a picture of a black celebrity in last night’s guessing game. Fellow guest and Beverly Hills housewife Crystal Kung Minkoff predicted Hilton would recognize the “It’s About Damn Time” singer. But in response to Lizzo’s face appearing on the monitor, Hilton was quick to guess, “Precious?”
Seemingly out of discomfort or genuine amusement, Cohen, Kung Minkoff, and the episode’s bartenders — who happened to be Greg Mathis Jr., the son of TV judge Greg Mathis, and his partner Elliot Cooper — burst out laughing, with Cohen having to cover his face with a his note cards.
The clip somehow gets worse as Minkoff jokingly attempts to correct Hilton’s snafu by saying, “Lizzo is precious.” That’s when Hilton revealed that she actually knows Lizzo, but chooses to call her Precious.
“That’s what I call her,” Paris Hilton’s mother shrugged. “Her nickname is Precious to me.”
The segment immediately began circulating on Twitter during last night’s show, with users mostly expressing shock. Now that the clip is circulating online, people are accusing Hilton of misogyny and fat phobia.
In response to a now-deleted video of the incident, E! News anchor Nina Parker tweeted, “Black women are not here to be the butt of your jokes. TF is that???”
Comedian and actor Kalen Allen, who was famous for his work The Ellen Degeneres ShowShe had a few words about Hilton’s slip-up, which we now know wasn’t actually a slip-up.
Others chimed in to denounce Hilton’s comments, noting the rumor that Hilton’s assistant used a homophobic slur during filming of this season of Stracke Beverly Hills and her family’s hostile history with black people — not to mention Hilton’s friendship with the Trumps. Meanwhile, Cohen – who was previously under scrutiny for assaulting multiracial actress Amandla Stenberg WWHL after publicly criticizing the cultural appropriation – and other participants in the taping being dragged along for a laugh. (Judge Mathis, who was in attendance, clarified on Instagram that the moment was “awkward for the whole studio.”
Neither Lizzo nor Sidibe have yet responded directly to Hilton. However, the “Special” singer Posted Some bikini photos on Twitter with the caption, “Meanwhile…” Hopefully these two queens have no idea who Paris and Nicky Hilton’s mother is and are enjoying their day — although the video is gaining traction. We’ll see if Cohen, who has juggled many similar scandals at Bravo for the past two years, acknowledges the incident in Thursday night’s episode.
