Kaseya provides a software that allows companies to manage their computer systems, and it provides that software to managed service providers that serve tens of thousands of companies. Affected software spread to the middle 800 and 1,500 companies, Kaseya estimates. Those companies were then unable to access their files. Instead, they are prompted to pay a ransom to obtain a decryption key that will return control to them. Ransom requests range from $45,000 for smaller companies to $5 million for larger companies.
