Kal Penn Stars in FX Comedy Series ‘Belly’ About Becoming a Gay Later

Kal Penn was cast as the male lead of FXComedy pilot coming soon Belated, written, directed and executive produced by Baby me and Work co-creator Peter Tolan.
Based on Deadline, a half-hour comedy that follows Owen (Penn), a man in his 40s, with his ex-wife Diana, as they try to find a new normal. The couple continued to parent together while starting a new relationship. Owen also befriends a 17-year-old transgender man named Clay.
The project is personally meaningful to both Tolan, who became gay later in life, and Penn, 44, who popped out a few weeks ago, announcing his engagement to his partner of 11 years in memoir “You Can’t Be Serious”, published on 2/11.
Penn’s character Owen is a dry, intelligent man who is the chief of pediatrics at a top New York City hospital. He has a wonderful wife, a family, and a home in a quaint, upscale Connecticut town. However, a relationship with another man causes Owen to re-evaluate his sexual orientation and belatedly realize that he is gay.
He’s forced to find a way to navigate his new reality while fixing things up with his loved ones, a slightly tougher challenge after transgender teen Clay randomly arrives on a stooped front. by Owen.
FX Productions is a studio with Tolan’s Cloudland’s Nick Alford, who is executive producing the pilot.
