The circa 1869 house was built by Edgar Murphy, an African-American carpenter from West Virginia. In the 1870 Census, Murphy was listed as a 46-year-old carpenter with a $2,000 estate. He lived in the house, on Olive Street, NW, with his family and tenants until his death in 1908. His wife remained in the house until her death in 1914.
