Jon Favreau compares Boba Fett’s book to gangster movies

Boba Fett’s book is drawing inspiration from a number of closely related sources, and it could lead the Star Wars series into some fresh areas.

Star Wars The Book of Boba Fett Corleone The Godfather

Star Wars never shy away from paying homage to other classics of film and television. Heck, the first film heavily and purposefully inspired by It’s so elaborate and the classic Akira Kurosawa samurai movies (especially Hidden Fortress), and it’s now become one of the funniest and most recognizable brands in the world. So it’s no surprise that the franchise retains that knack to this day, up to and including the upcoming Disney Plus series. Books by Boba Fett.

However, instead of the engaging action and distinct visual flair of the source Star Wars tend to draw from, it looks like host Jon Favreau has something a little more serious in mind this time around. Anyway, Boba Fett is a full-time resident of the criminal underworld. Too classic Star Wars Stories about a hero’s journey don’t really blend well with the kinds of stories one would expect from the man in Mandalorian armor.

In a recent interview with Empire, Favreau explained in detail the background of Books by Boba Fett and how does it fit Star Wars The universe. “There was an energy gap… because Jabba was gone,” he said, recalling the program’s allotted time frame. after Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. “Jabba is clearly a very powerful and dignified leader, who everyone is so feared and seemingly rules over with an iron fist. You pull such a person out of the ecosystem of Tatooine – and Hutt Space. in general – and you have a ripe opportunity in the gangster genre.”

That’s right. This time, the inspiration is not from heroic stories of daring actions, but stories about how gangsters can create GodfatherCorleone’s family feel at home. True, this won’t be a story about “keeping the family together” or anything like that. Boba is bound to have his job cut for him if he wants to dominate in that world, especially since this is something very different from his usual fare. “Although Boba Fett is a very experienced bounty hunter, he has no experience running a criminal organization or managing forces,” Favreau continued. “He’s usually not a novice. He’s an expert like we see him in most areas. But in this case, he’s trying to move into a different position.”

There’s something really exciting about seeing a new high profile Star Wars project in a style that many don’t expect from the series. That’s part of the reason why Star Wars: Visions resonate with many people. Certainly, some entries of its own drew inspiration from almost exactly the same sources that George Lucas did when creating that world (like Kurosawa’s movie). But execution is where they stand out, introducing viewers to entirely new ideas, injecting life into the franchise they already love.

When Books by Boba Fett launch, it looks like it will serve a dual purpose. First, there are some long-fulfilled wishes for those who have loved Fett since then The Empire Strikes Back. But now it’s going to shake things up a bit with its gangster-inspired vibe. Just like the way Mandalorian explored a space far west and brought in loads of new fans, maybe this will do the same for those who really enjoy gabagool.

Books by Boba Fett will premiere on December 29, 2021, on Disney Plus.
