This week saw the fall of the highly politicized Supreme Court Roe v. calfa landmark 1973 ruling protecting a woman’s right to an abortion (in other words, granting women bodily autonomy and keeping the government out of their wombs).
The move drew widespread condemnation, especially given that right-wing organizations have launched an ugly, decades-long campaign against a woman’s right to vote (including bribing Jane Roe, aka Norma McCorvey, to speak out against the decision) and four of the five conservative Supreme Court justices who voted for the knockdown roe—Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett — who said during their Senate confirmation hearings that it was established law. The move will see 22 states ban abortion, along with 13 states that outright banned it under trigger laws.
“It’s absolutely appalling,” exclaimed John Oliver on Sunday night’s edition of Last week tonightbefore targeting some of the Republicans’ “joyful reactions” following the decision, including Mike Pence, who said “life won”.
“Which is pretty hard to take when you consider that for some in particular, especially disabled people and other vulnerable groups, a forced pregnancy could be a death sentence,” Oliver said. “And make no mistake: this decision is far-reaching. It states that states could restrict abortion at all stages of development — language that could mean, without exception, from the moment of conception.”
As if that weren’t enough, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, in his unanimous opinion, wrote that “in future cases we should consider all the material precedents of this court, inclusive Griswold, Laurentiusand upper skin— landmark decisions protecting the ability to buy and use contraception, have anal or oral sex, and allow same-sex couples to marry.
“Yes. Clarence Thomas wants to uphold the sanctity of marriage – because as we all know, marriage is between a man who has been credibly accused of sexual harassment and a woman who wanted to overthrow a presidential election. You know, like God does intended,” joked Oliver.
The HBO host then turned his anger on the Democrats, who had many weeks to prepare a forceful response to the coup roegiven the previous leak of SCOTUS’ draft opinion.
“It’s been disheartening to see so many Democrats completely missing the moment this week — a moment, by the way, they’ve had nearly two months for,” Oliver fumed. “Nancy Pelosi read a poem, a Rep. [Andy Levin, D-MI] tweeted a picture of himself doing yoga, and so many Democrats sent in money requests, truly living up to that old Democrat adage: If they are low we ask for $15. (House Democrats also chose to sing “God Bless America” on the Capitol steps for some reason.)
He continued, “And I’m not saying all I want from leaders is to show anger, but it’s been depressing to see how so many of them are handling the ending Roe v. calf with the solemnity of a funeral instead of the urgency of a bloody cardiac arrest. And they stand in stark contrast to the groups on the ground, who have demonstrated this urgency for years. They fought tirelessly when abortion rights were abolished across the country, and they worked tirelessly to circumvent every restriction and provide health services to those who were denied them, even when it was very difficult.”
