John Legend rocked the house at Nordstrom and Sperry’s “A Legendary Vacation” event on Friday at the Nordstrom Midtown Manhattan location.

The singer and songwriter celebrated the launch of his shoe collection with Sperry in-store, performing a mix of his hit songs for hundreds of guests including “Ordinary People” from his “Get Lifted” album. ; “Save Room” from second album “Once Again” and classic Christmas tunes like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, featured on first Christmas album “A Legendary Christmas”.

The event attracted the participation of Brooke Shields, Justin Theroux, Titus Burgess, Nicole Ari Parker, Natasha Lyonne, Dominique Jackson, founder Noah and J. Crew menswear designer Brendon Babenzien and singer Shaina Shepherd , who opened Legend. After Legend’s performance, Nordstrom threw an after party with music provided by Questlove.

Legend, the first black man to win an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award), celebrated the holiday with Sperry last year in a similar fashion, also celebrating joining the company. as a brand ambassador in 2020, but mostly due to lockdown rules over the pandemic.

“I’m so grateful,” Legend said of performing for a live audience. “I am grateful that scientists have developed a vaccine so that we can feel safe when we are out in public together again. When it’s been taken away from you for more than a year, you’re sure to appreciate it after a while and you miss it, and it’s fun to be out there again. “

The legend has many warm memories of the holidays, growing up in a family where music sings around the piano every Christmas – “I tried to continue that tradition by making my Christmas album. on my own,” he says—but he considers his fondest memory to be his marriage proposal. with his now wife Chrissy Teigen in the Maldives almost exactly 10 years ago. Today, they celebrate the holiday with two kids – five-year-old Luna and three-year-old Miles – who Legend says loves his Christmas album.

“We love Christmas music, we love holiday music and singing together,” he said. “My kids love it [the album] and the fact that they listen to it year round. But we also love to cook. Chrissy is the queen of the kitchen, but she loves to invite all of us in. The kids will make desserts with us, cook with us and have fun with us in the kitchen so it’s also part of our holiday celebrations.

And regarding what Legend wants to receive this Christmas at Nordstrom, “I don’t really make wish lists,” he says, and he prefers to think about what he can give rather than give. what he gets.

“I really have everything I could possibly need, but I’m always thinking about what I can give to others, so I make sure we’re taking care of our children and for people I don’t know. know through donations. We always try to do a lot of that, especially during this time of year. “

In addition to designing a capsule collection for Sperry, Legend has spent most of this year working on his next album. He recently signed a new record deal with Republic Records after 17 years with Sony. His next album, slated for release in 2022, will be his first on the new label.

“We’re almost done with it,” he said. “It’s going to be fun. I had a lot of fun doing it. The first half of the year I did it and then I went on tour this summer and it was just a fun year of music and I’m so excited. Happy to hear what we’re working on.”

And a holiday album on Republic in the card? “Probably, but the next thing you’ll hear is a classic John Legend album.”
