Jessica Watkins, who holds a bachelor’s degree in geosciences and the environment from Stanford University and a doctorate in geology at the University of California, Los Angeles, was selected to the program in 2017. During the assignment, she will study Earth land and space, biological sciences. and human studies of things like the effects of long-duration flights on humans.

While there are nearly 250 crew members sent to live and work on the space station, less than 10 of them are black – and none are women. In an interview discussing being selected for the historic trip, Watkins had this to say:

“I hope going to the space station will set an example for children of color, and especially young girls of color, to be able to see an example of the ways in which they can participate and succeed.”

She continued:

“For me, that’s really important, and so if I can contribute to that in some way, it’s definitely worth it.”
