Jays RH Gausman exits the game after being hit by a liner on foot

TORONTO (AP) — Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman left Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader against Tampa Bay after being hit in the right foot by a line drive by Ray’s shortstop Wander Franco.

Franco’s liner, which had an exit speed of 100 mph, struck Gausman and bounced off catcher Gabriel Moreno, who initially pulled Franco back to finish the inning and left the bases loaded.

Gausman stumbled forward and fell face down in front of the mound after one punch. He got the coach’s attention before getting up and walking slowly off the field.

Gausman signed a five-year, $110 million deal with the Blue Jays last offseason. He started Saturday 6-6 with a 2.93 ERA.

Gausman allowed four hits in two scoreless innings before leaving. He walked one and hit three.

Right-hander Casey Lawrence, who joined the Blue Jays as the 27th man for Saturday’s doubleheader, replaced Gausman in the third.
