James Gunn explains how the Peacemaker opens the credits to life

After a long wait and lots of promotional content, James Gunn’s People of Peace finally premiered on HBO Max last week. While the first four episodes led to a lot of discussion on social media, one thing that stood out was the opening sequence, which really delighted fans and Gunn explained how they came to life.

Fans who watched the first four seasons episode of People of Peacepremiered in HBO Max on January 13, it will be known that the opening sequence includes the entire cast dancing robotically to Wig Wam’s song “Do Ya Wanna Taste It”. Throughout the dance, they maintain serious expressions, in keeping with the absurd theme of the series itself. In the past, Gunn has said that the song’s purpose is to “smash expectations”, but now he’s explained it’s always been part of the script.

I wrote it into the script, it was always there,” Gunn revealed in an interview with HBO Max, shared by @DCComics on Twitter. He soon learned that he wanted the dance segment to be part of the movie and even perfected the song as part of the script. “The idea is that this is going to be a very eccentric dance, with everyone looking super serious,” he said.

For the scene, Gunn hired choreographer and actress Charissa Barton, who happened to be married to actor Alan Tudyk. At the time of taking her on the plane, Gunn was unaware of her relationship status and thought it was “crazy” for him to find out. Interestingly, the performance was prepared during the ongoing pandemic, and when Barton worked from home, she would ask her husband to perform the dance “in their living room”, recording clips of it, then send it to Gunn.

“I have a clip Alan made total People of Peace jump,” Gunn revealed and had a good laugh. Once the video is available, Gunn will either approve a specific choreographed step-by-step or ask for something different. “That’s why it happened,” he said. Tudyk has been very supportive of his wife and promoted the series on his personal Twitter account, and Gunn says he’s “a part of it”.

People of Peace is a spin-off series from Year 2021 Suicide Squad and bring John Cena’s unusual superhero back to the small screen. After his antics and betrayals in the film, Cena’s Peacemaker is currently working with another team including Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee’s John Economos, Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo, Robert Patrick’s Auggie Smith, Clemson Murn by Chukwudi Iwuji and Vigilante by Freddie Stroma.
