James Brown’s Family Settles 15-Year Dispute Over Estate

The family of the late singer James Brown reached an agreement to settle a 15-year dispute over its property, according to Related press.

The attorney representing Brown’s estate, David Black, told the AP that the settlement was reached on July 9, although the details of the settlement were not made public.

The estate of Brown, who died aged 73 on December 25, 2006, has been plagued by more than a dozen lawsuits since his death. One of the most prominent was Tomi Rae Hynie, Brown’s ex-partner who claimed to be his fourth and final wife. But in June 2020, the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled the marriage invalid, determining that Hynie was not legally married to Brown and therefore had no rights to his property, which the court did. Project estimates can range from $5 million to $100 million. As her widow, Hynie may have rights under state law to at least one-third of her estate, such as New York Times report.

According to the New York Times, Hynie’s marriage to Brown was deemed invalid because at the time they married in 2001, Hynie was already married to another man, whom she discovered had three wives in New York. Pakistan. Hynie’s attorneys argued that because Hynie’s ex-husband had had several other marriages, their marriage was null and void – but citing a 2008 ruling, the South Carolina Supreme Court said that the this marriage has not been officially declared null and void by the “competent court”. The York Times reported.

Now that the settlement has been reached and Hynie is not involved in the estate, Brown’s children are expected to have the right to terminate the copyright to Brown’s publishing deals, according to the New York Times. This may also allow them to control Brown’s desire to be expressed in his will to establish scholarships for underprivileged children in South Carolina and Georgia.
