Italian Senate meeting interrupted due to inappropriate Final Fantasy content

Fan-generated content is always a fun topic, and popular games like Final Fantasy 7 there’s a lot of it. Much of the fan art is completely sane and will be safe to show to kids, co-workers and even co-workers in an important government agency.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Italian Parliament relies on Zoom meetings to see the vital business of running an entire country. Yesterday, the Senate, the upper house of the Italian Parliament, met at Zoom to discuss data transparency in politics. About 30 minutes into the procedure, the senators were preparing to hear the testimony of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Giorgio Parisi. However, during his introduction, an unidentified person stepped on the call and began screen-sharing a pornographic video of him. Final Fantasy 7’s Tifa Lockhart.

The supposedly fan-made video continued to play for a brief moment as Senator Maria Laura Mantovani and her assistant frantically tried to get it off the screen. The sound continues for a few seconds after the image disappears. In recognition of his merit, Dr. Parisi immediately continued his prepared statement after someone managed to completely close the offending video. While it’s a true example of professionalism, it’s supposed to be a little harder for Senators to gather after a few seconds of important documents.

The shameful and inappropriate incident is also not just for the Senate. The Italian parliament streamed the meeting live to Facebook and broadcaster Senato della Repubblica, the country’s equivalent of C-SPAN. Officers edited the NSFW content out of the VOD of the stream, though not before internet users copied it to various other sites.

It is not known how the indecent video ended up in a Zoom call by the Italian Senate. Italian officials blame the incident on hackers, according to the Italian web publication Digital Daily, where the story originated. Even so, it is possible that whoever set up the meeting neglected to manage its permissions. This may have opened the door for an anonymous internet user to perform their apparent prank.

Either way, it’s an embarrassing episode for the Italian legislature. As Digital Daily pointed out, it reflects poorly on the Senate’s ability to run if it cannot continue to operate without a license. Final Fantasy 7 video out of its official meetings. Either way, the incident is undeniably a memorable way to welcome 2022.
