Now Kardashian’s wearing of the dress has sparked controversy again, as a collector has accused the company that owns it of “allowing” it to be damaged by letting the reality star wear it.

What alleged damage was done to the dress and what do the owners of the dress have to say?

Here’s everything you need to know.

Which Marylin Monroe dress did Kim Kardashian wear?

Kim Kardashian wore the iconic gold dress worn by Monroe when she famously sang a Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

The crystal-studded cream dress is valued at US$5million (around £3.9million) and Kardashian was the only person to wear it since Monroe, when she debuted it on Monday April 2.

The Met Gala is a benefit event celebrating the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion show on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York.

Also known as the Oscars of fashion, the gala is attended by celebrities from the fields of fashion, film, television, music, sports and social media.

What alleged damage occurred to the dress?

A collector of Monroe memorabilia has claimed that the private museum that owns the dress allowed it to be “permanently damaged” when it was loaned to reality star Kardashian.

Scott Fortner, a collector who runs a website dedicated solely to Monroe, posted before-and-after photos of the crystal-encrusted cream dress to Instagram on Sunday, June 12.

The reshoots were done by a friend of Fortner’s, Chad Michael Christian Morrisette, who featured the dress on Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum of Curiosities in Los Angeles, which owned the dress and allowed Kardashian to wear it.

The comparison shots appear to show small tears in the fabric near the hooks used to hold the dress together, as well as missing crystals and some embellishments hanging from a thread.

The caption read: “The dress on display at Ripley’s Hollywood location on June 12, 2022. Shared with me by @1morrisette.

So much for maintaining “the integrity of dress and preservation.” @ripleysbelieveitornot was it worth it?”

Fortner said in a follow-up post Wednesday, June 15, that he didn’t blame Kardashian for the damage, he blamed Ripley.

“I blame Ripley’s as they allowed the dress to be worn.

“I think any celebrity given the chance to wear this piece of clothing would most likely jump at the opportunity.

“There’s a reason someone would want to wear it. Kim K. happened to be the one who had to do it.

“It is now permanently damaged and likely would have been damaged regardless of who wore it.”

In another follow-up post on Thursday, June 16, Fortner said the dress wasn’t perfect before, but it has now been further damaged.

“By my count, the after photo is missing seven crystals that were present during the fitting. The screenshots only show part of the dress. There are probably many more missing.

“It was never implied that the dress was in perfect condition. My own photos show some missing crystals before the auction. Today, however, there are significantly more.”

He also posted a video that appeared to show Kardashian being helped dressed ahead of the Met Gala.

What did the owners of the dress say?

Ripley believe it or not! said it was “confident” that Kardashian didn’t damage the dress.

A company spokesman said, “Kim Kardashian’s walk up the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum at this year’s Met Gala drew quite a bit of attention, but one thing is Ripley’s Believe It or Not! can say with certainty that it did not damage Marilyn Monroe’s famous 1962 “Happy Birthday” dress.

“Our mission is to both entertain and educate visitors and fans, and sparking conversations like the discourse on Marilyn Monroe’s dress does just that.

“Regardless of which side of the debate you are on, the historical importance of the dress has not been negated, but rather emphasized. A whole new group of young people have now been introduced to the legacy of Marilyn Monroe.”

Kardashian only wore the dress for a short time and transformed into a replica dress after she appeared on the red carpet in the real outfit.

The company spokesman added, “From the bottom of the Met steps where Kim stepped into the dress to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started.”

The company previously said that Kardashian asked to wear the dress.

In a press release issued on the day of the Met Gala, they added, “Great care has been taken to preserve this piece of pop culture history.

“With input from clothing protectors, appraisers and archivists, the condition of the garment was a top priority. No alterations were allowed to be made to the dress. Is the Marilyn Monroe dress worn by Kim Kardashian damaged?
