Royal Challengers Bangalore take on Punjab Kings to advance to the knockout stages of Indian Premier League
The Indian Premier League is the highlight of the cricket calendar for thousands of fans around the world as the extravagant and rollicking competition offers an unparalleled level of excitement and intensity.
Two new franchises have joined the 2022 tournament: the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow SuperGiants, led by Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul respectively. Not only is this their first year in the competition, but they also top the league table with just 14 games left in the group stage.
Jos Buttler has been the standout artist of this year’s tournament so far, lighting the stage with a total of three centuries, three 50s and 37 sixes.
But as we prepare for the Royal Challengers Bangalore taking on the Punjab Kings, here’s what their combined dream team could look like.
When is RCB vs PBKS?
The two teams meet today, Friday 13 May 2022, and the game is scheduled to start at 15:00 BST. The game will be available to watch on Sky Sports.
Despite being 37 years old, Faf du Plessis is still one of the greatest outfield players of all time and is currently his team’s top runs scorer.
Du Plessis is currently the captain of the Royal Challengers of Bangalore and has recorded 389 runs with a 35.36 average.
He achieved a high score of 96 and has a lot of experience captaining a team. The 2019 South African Cricket Player of the Year previously captained his country from 2017 until announcing his retirement in 2021.
The England all-rounder rose to fame during last year’s The Hundred tournament, when he led his side – Birmingham Phoenix – to the final, becoming the tournament’s top run scorer in the process.
He is currently the Punjab Kings’ second-highest run scorer with 315 runs and has also added value with his ability to bowl as both a leg and off-spinner.
South Africa’s star bowler is proving to be just as destructive as his opponents feared. He has won 18 wickets in his 10 games for the Punjab Kings and is confident he will make a difference in the death overs.
He can consistently bowl at around 90 mph and is currently on an IPL average of 17.94 for 2022.
At 36, Dinesh Karthik appears to be at the top of his game in the limited overs tournament.
As RCB number five and wicket-keeper, Karthik has also hit 274 runs with an average of 68.50 – one of the highest averages at this year’s tournament.
When his opening players are out, he is sure to provide phenomenal support for his side.
Jonny Bairstow has dropped from this dream squad in favor of the West Indian all-rounder Odean Smith.
Bairstow has been in mixed form for the past few months but has still put up 136 runs in his eight games.
However, Smith can offer much more power and strength with both racquet and ball. In the tournament so far, his best numbers are 4/30 while he also enjoys a batting average of 17.00.
Jitesh Sharma is also a case of conflict. He has performed superbly for the Punjab Kings so far but his wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik has the edge.
Sharma would be an excellent addition to batting side should Shabhez Ahmed pick up an injury but as far as wicket-keepers go there was a very clear winner.
Shikhar Dhawan; Faf du Plessis; Virat Kohli; Liam Livingstone; Dinesh Karthik (wk); Shabhez Ahmed; Glenn Maxwell; Warindu Hasaranga; Odean Smith; Kagiso Rabada; Josh Hazlewood.
