It’s easy to imagine yourself battling a viral outbreak or a deadly natural disaster because both are rooted in the familiar. What about an alien invasion? It’s not a far-fetched idea. Many people can easily accept that life exists beyond Earth. With that said, the creators of projects involving aliens have a multitude of creative freedoms when it comes to storytelling due to the varied representations of aliens in entertainment. It’s Kang and Kodos, sly aliens from The Simpsons, or the mysterious Demogorgons, monsters that exist to haunt the town of Hawkins, Indiana, or even official aliens from Lilo & Stich, a sweet dog-like friend on the way to finding compassion and family. The original Apple TV series Invasion takes another twist with extraterrestrials, bringing in deadly, mechanical creatures and showing their impact on the global world.
Join Invasion as Luke Malik is the young actor Azhy Robertson. He was previously seen on screen in Netflix’s Marriage Story and the horror film by Jacob Chase Come play. While video-game-preteen obsession isn’t entirely new to the sci-fi genre, he’s still challenged within the series’ setting. Talking to Game Rant, he shared, “I really liked the character of Luke because he started out as a normal kid, but then the alien invasion really messed up his and his family’s lives. He’s starting to care more about his family, especially his younger sister, Sarah. I feel like he’s really grown up for his age and he knows something that He doesn’t allow it.”
Moving on, he highlighted one of the most challenging moments he endured while playing the character. Robertson said, “There was a point in episode two where I had to scream out loud for him [Luke] heard some strange, alien stuff in his ears. It was pretty crazy because I had to scream out loud. I had to cry and it really hurt.” Game Rant had the opportunity to chat with Robertson about his favorite video games, get into the character and how long he would survive an alien invasion.
Game Rant: Have you been binge-watching lately?
Azhy Robertson: I’ve just finished Squid fishing game. It was pretty good. I love it. I also just started watching League of Legends Program Arcane on Netflix.
GR: I see your guitar in the background. Do you play guitar? With that, acting and school, what does your daily schedule look like?
AR: Yes, it’s a bass. I picked it up again after a few years. It was a really good decision. It was really fun. I get up around 5:30 [A.M.] because my school is of remote type. I went to school until my father left. When I’m at home, I usually do my homework and then practice [his guitar]. And then I started playing video games.
GR: What video game are you playing?
AR: I played a lot Minecraft with my friends. I just got a new one Call of Duty. I’m excited for the new one Battlefield 2 it’s coming out. [Author note: He’s way too cool!]
GR: Go straight in Invasion th – What was your first reaction upon receiving the script? Are you an alien fan? Does this tick some boxes on your dream list?
AR: I really like sci-fi stuff and aliens in general. So that’s pretty cool. I was interested in that part of the show. But also the characters because they come from all over the world. They’re really interesting to see all their reactions to the whole, like, world-ending alien invasion.
GR: How would you react if you found out right now that the world is being invaded by aliens? Do you like, a few weeks? What you will do?
AR: I’m really scared. Um, maybe I locked the door. Barrier them? Do as much as you can to stay safe.
GR: I have a family joke that if there’s a zombie apocalypse, I’ll be out. I was the first to go. How long do you think you will survive an alien invasion? That is a dark question. I’m sorry.
AR: No, it’s okay. I also thought about it a few times. I probably won’t last very long. I am a petty thief. When I’m dirty, I rush to wash my hands. A lot of things are probably going to get raw and messy about a zombie apocalypse or an alien invasion, so I probably won’t last long.
GR: I feel like we watched you grow up on screen. I remember Marriage Story and Come play. What is the composite lesson you learned in your early roles that helped you take on this Apple TV series?
AR: There are three main things that I always keep in mind: Do your best as your character. Don’t try too hard, because doing so will make your performance look awkward, not very good. And, I always try to see myself as my character.
GR: How have your friends and family reacted to Invasion and your role?
AR: My family is really proud of me. My mom and dad are really cool and supportive when I act. I try not to talk much about it with my friends, but usually, they’ll say, “Oh, I saw your new show. It’s really good.” And I and I were like, “Oh, that’s great. Thanks.”
