An Instagram influencer has been charged with murder after she allegedly fatally stabbed her boyfriend in a luxury Miami skyscraper in April.
Courtney Clenney, a 26-year-old OnlyFans model, was taken into custody in Hawaii on Wednesday after being charged with second-degree murder with a deadly weapon in connection with the April 3 death of her boyfriend, 27-year-old Christian Obumseli had been for Miami Herald. The Miami-Dade Attorney’s Office will hold a press conference Thursday afternoon on the arrest, stating in a press briefing that the arrest report is sealed but a “social media personality” has been charged in connection with Obumseli’s murder.
Clenney’s defense attorney, Frank Prieto, confirmed the charges to the Herald, saying his client was in a Hawaiian rehab facility for substance abuse and PTSD. “I am completely shocked, especially as we have cooperated with the investigation and offered to voluntarily surrender her if she is charged,” Prieto told the outlet. “We look forward to clearing her name in court.”
Prieto and the Miami Police Department did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast’s request for comment.
The arrest marks the biggest advance in the investigation into the gruesome murder. The Miami Police Department previously said that around 5 p.m. on April 3, officers were responding to a report of a stabbing at the One Paraiso luxury building, where they found Obumseli, who worked in cryptocurrency, with a “knife wound.”
“A woman was located at the scene and questioned by investigators,” police said.
Obumseli was then taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. While the details of Obumseli’s death remain unclear, a police spokesman told The Daily Beast that the couple “were engaged in a physical altercation” prior to the attack.
Local media reports also indicated that Clenney was arrested at the scene to be transferred to a mental health facility under the state’s Baker Act – which allows police to involuntarily detain a person for up to 72 hours.
At the time, Prieto insisted that Clenney acted in self-defense.
Clenney—with 2 million followers on Instagram, 25,700 on TikTok and 41,000 more on Twitter– describes herself as “the girl from the internet” on social media accounts, going by the name “Courtney Tailor”. On her OnlyFans account, Clenney describes herself as a “proud Texan! Full-time fitness model and foodie who lives with my two dogs, Jesse and Ranger. I just moved to Miami so I need your positive vibes! Huge change for this little girl from Texas.”
On April 2nd, an OnlyFans post on their page said: “Talk dirty to me”. The day before, her page wrote, “I’m not always that bad…wait, yeah I am lol.”
According to that Dallas morning newsthe couple recently relocated to Florida from Texas, and initial reports suggested that night’s conflict wasn’t the first time the couple had had a physical altercation.
“We saw her hit him. I’ve never seen him hit her,” Ashley Vaughn, a friend of the couple, told Local10. “From what we have personally experienced between the two, we believe Christian would not put her in a position where she would have to stab him to protect herself.” (A neighbor told the same outlet that she was about a had seen Obumseli hitting her a week before the incident.)
Another friend told the outlet the Miami friends group is now shaken by the news — and by the reality that both Clenney and Obumseli were lost to them. “We didn’t think it would go that far,” said Tahki Banks.
In a GoFundMe campaign, Obumseli’s family said the “ruthless” tragedy happened just a week before his 28th birthday – and it’s hard to believe “that someone by their selfish act took Christian out of this world.” The family described Obumseli as an “extremely compassionate” person with a “contagious smile that could light up any room,” adding that they were seeking justice for the “heinous act of violence.” The family did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast’s request for comment.
“Suffice it to say that we are shocked and hurt – we are absolutely devastated,” the family said in the online campaign. “His murder leaves many unanswered questions and creates a void that can never be repaired or filled. Not even with time.”
