In ‘Island of Fire’ Trailer, Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang Form Gay ‘Pride and Prejudice’

THAT’S RIGHT Proud and prejudice fans will remember Elizabeth Bennet’s dream come true, in addition to settling down with her dream Sir Darcy: visiting Fire Island. Though she’s never been to the summer getaway — as far as we know, at least — Bowen Yang and Joel Kim Booster have kept her legacy alive in the trailer for the romantic comedy. their new side, Fire Island.
Yes, this topless parade of super-fit men is based on Jane Austen’s Proud and prejudice, with sunny pools and opulent waterfronts replacing the novel’s moody rainy setting. In a first look at Hulu’s gripping rom-com, a large group of gay friends journeys to a sacred destination, ready to embrace a summer of romance, drinking, and Speedos.
How does one find a large group of friends ready to go on a wild summer vacation year after year? Trained in the fire, this crew meets at a horribly late breakfast spot while the table waits. They are fortunate to meet Erin (Margaret Cho), the owner of a tent on the island. But they seem to have outgrown those accommodations in the trailer, knocking down a beachfront mansion filled with mouthwatering beach food and drinking that’s way too far for them to pay.
While there doesn’t appear to be a new Keira Knightley / Matthew Macfadyen in the trailer — most of the romance is kept under wraps — the goal of Fire Island not to recreate Proud and prejudice beat for beat. Booster opened up about the influence Austen’s romances had on the project while chatting with Vanity Fair.
“Jane Austen’s observations of how people treat each other badly without being mean to each other – I said, ‘Oh, my God. This is the shade. This is what gay men have always done,'” Booster said. He also recalls reading Proud and prejudice in Pines and came up with the idea for the movie: “I turned to Bowen and was like, ‘I should write Proud and prejudice Set on Fire Island. That wouldn’t be so funny, would it? ‘”
Fire Island not always set up for a Hulu release. Back in 2019, the late Quibi announced they would be developing a comedy series outing starring, creative, and written by Joel Kim Booster. With Quibi’s departure came the end of the original project – until Searchlight Pictures picked up Booster’s script. Attached Andrew Ahn directing and filming the series into a movie, Fire Island has been reborn.
In addition to Booster and Yang, Fire IslandThe film’s cast including Margaret Cho, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Nick Adams, and many more cheerfully boarded the ferry for an unforgettable summer.
Fire Island will premiere on Hulu on June 3.
