In Donald Hall’s ‘Old Poets’, a Portrait of Ezra Pound, Robert Frost and TS Eliot

Attendance: Frost, Dylan Thomas, Archibald MacLeish, Yvor Winters, Marianne Moore, Ezra Pound. Other stars also intertwine (William Carlos Williams, Adrienne Rich, etc.). I cannot overstate the joy of Hall’s prose – supple, exploratory, humorous; never waste yourself – as a witness, interviewer, fan, issuer, editor, critic, philosopher. In Frost’s written introduction to Harvard’s first collection, Hall notes that the work “has made a small dance between the concepts of poetry and has grown old. The prose is typical of Frost in its eloquent winding, “and” addresses his doubts by opening them up without calling them doubts. And oh, he can make a sentence; he can play on words and turn his back on it to convert. ” While a later work of Frost is “the work of an elderly man. As I read it now, it tells me more than it ever did.”
