The eruption of Mount Semeru, Indonesia’s highest mountain Java’s most populous island, struck during a thunderstorm and sent more than 1,700 residents fleeing to emergency evacuation posts.
Neighboring towns and villages, covered with ashes and debris, were damaged, with nearly 3,000 homes and 38 educational institutions affected, according to emergency authorities.
