Illinois COVID update today: IL reports 670 cases, 4 deaths

CHICAGO (WLS) – Illinois public health officials reported 670 newly confirmed and likely cases of COVID-19 and four related deaths on Monday.

There have been a total of 1,402,763 COVID cases, including 23,377 deaths in the state since the pandemic began.

The statewide seven-day preliminary test results from July 12 to 19 were 2.8%.

As positivity rates increase nationally, the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued new guidance recommending that all students over the age of 2 wear a mask in school for face-to-face learning. Earlier this summer, the CDC said fully immunized teachers and students would not need to wear masks.

Dr Taylor Heald-Sargent of Lurie Children’s Hospital said: “They are recommending it to everyone because it will be very difficult to make sure that everyone has received the qualified vaccine.

Some school districts in Illinois have decided to opt for masks, although vaccines are not yet available for children under 12 years of age.

Trials of the vaccine for children are underway, and doctors expect the vaccine to be available for children ages 6 to 12 by late fall and for children under 6 in winter.

As the delta variant of COVID spreads more easily across the country, Los Angeles County has reinstated its mandate to wear masks indoors. Illinois and Chicago health officials have yet to come up with plans to make masks mandatory, at least not yet, as cases here are still relatively low.

“I’m not worried about having to do major shutdowns and lockdowns, because we have an effective vaccine, but I do worry about individuals choosing not to take advantage of that,” said CPDH Commissioner Dr Allison Arwady said.

Just over 51% of Chicago residents are fully immunized; Illinois state is slightly lower. In the whole country, only 48.6% of the population is fully vaccinated.

“If we don’t vaccinate a significant proportion of these stubborn people, you’re going to see a smoldering outbreak in our country within a short period of time,” said Dr. considerable period of time”. Infectious Diseases.

Chicago Public Schools has parents vaccinated children 12 years of age and older through July 26 to be fully immunized before the first day of school.

Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported testing 21,596 specimens out of a total of 26,386,287 since the pandemic began.
As of Sunday night, 537 patients in Illinois were reported to be hospitalized with COVID-19. Of these, 107 patients are in the ICU and 38 COVID-19 patients are on ventilators.
