Ilhan Omar jumps into the fray, calling out GOP leader Kevin McCarthy for refusing to discipline Lauren Boebert even after she apologized for the ‘Jihad’ comment

Minnesota Democrat Representative Ilhan Omar attacked House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., over the weekend after he refused to discipline Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., about remarks she made about Omar at a campaign event last month.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Omar called McCarthy a “liar and a coward” for refusing to take action against Boebert.

Omar told host Jake Tapper that McCarthy — and other Republicans in leadership positions — didn’t do enough to condemn Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) for comments she made is anti-Muslim and can incite extremists to commit dangerous or violent actions.

Tapper began with a summary of Boebert’s comments – a story she told and claimed that, while standing in the elevator with Omar, she joked with security that Omar was probably not the relationship threatened because she didn’t have a backpack. The obvious inference is that if Omar had carried a backpack, she could have been a suicide bomber.

“I want to start with those comments, Boebert compares you to a terrorist suicide bomber,” Tapper said of Omar. “How does it feel to hear this kind of blatant bigotry, coming from a member of the House of Commons?”

“It is shocking and unacceptable. It is very inappropriate for a congresswoman to use offensive, dangerous, inciting language against her colleagues”, Omar replied and said that in the years since the terrorist attacks 9 /11, at first she felt like America had made a lot of progress.

“The first time I won, I remember receiving phone calls from around the world from heads of state, prime ministers and foreign ministers congratulating me because they thought America had made it through. the fear of 9/11,” she said.

“And to see this happen right now in the lobby of Congress is really damaging not only to the Muslim community, to myself, but to the kind of country we want to be.”

Tapper noted that although McCarthy did not condemn Boebert, GOP leadership did note that the Colorado freshman apologized publicly.

“I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Congressman Omar,” Boebert tweeted. “I have reached out to her office to speak to her directly. There are a lot of policy differences that need to be focused on without causing this unnecessary distraction.”

“Just to be clear, after her conversation with you, Boebert took to social media and said equally harsh things. What was your reaction to McCarthy and how would he describe it? ”

“McCarthy is a liar and a coward. He’s incapable of condemning this kind of bigotry and anti-Muslims -” Omar began, but Tapper interrupted.

“Why isn’t he capable of doing that?” he asks.

“This is who they are,” Omar said, going on to claim that the Republican Party has effectively “normalized” anti-Muslim sentiment and bigotry.

Omar went on to say that she spoke with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week and indicated that Pelosi would take some kind of action.

“I had a conversation with Speaker. I am very confident that she will take decisive action next week,” Omar said.

“As you know, when I first went to Congress, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to take the oath of office because of the ban on headscarves. She promised me she would take care of it. She promised me she would take care of this,” added Omar.

That said, McCarthy last week countered that Pelosi and other Democratic leaders did not condemn Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for claiming he led a “Ku Klux Klan” caucus to all Republicans.

“People really don’t understand the scale, intensity, and volume of targeted threats [Rep. Ilhan Omar],” the AOC posted to Twitter. “Kevin McCarthy aspires to be a speaker so much that he is working with the Ku Klux Klan caucus to distance and enable violent targeting of woc (women of color) members of Congress. ”

“This cannot be ignored,” she added.

“While people spout clichés like ‘we condemn all forms of racism and bigotry’, the reality is that phobias are too often tolerated and ignored,” Congressman Ocasio-Cortez continued.

McCarthy has criticized Omar and her left ‘Special Squad’ member Ocasio-Cortez for their controversial comments.

“Let me be clear, this party is for anyone and everyone who aspires to freedom and supports religious freedom,” McCarthy announced. “Lauren Boebert, when I called her, when we talked, she apologized publicly, she apologized personally.”

“Do any of you question it when someone in their aisle says I worked with the Ku Klux Klan, referring to the Republican Party?” Republicans slammed.

“Is anyone in your aisle talking about a time when Omar said the only reason I support Israel is all about the Benjamins?” McCarthy continued, alluding to Omar.

Omar made comments widely criticized as anti-Semitic. In January 2020, she was selected as “Antisemite of the Year” 2019, through a poll from
