Hundreds of scientists and researchers are expected to gather on Parliament Hill on Thursday to demand a pay rise.

Organizers of the “Support our Science” rally say they will present Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Science and Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne with an open letter signed by thousands of scientists and more than 60 meters long .

The group says many graduate and postdoctoral students receive funding from three federal agencies, but often the grants are less than minimum wage.

They also say that graduate students have not seen a salary increase since 2003, and postdocs have only seen a 12.5 percent salary increase in those 19 years.

As a result, many researchers leave the country or leave their field altogether.

The group wants the federal government to increase the value of that funding by 48 percent to match inflation since 2003 and create 50 percent more grants for graduate and postdoctoral students.
