New Zealand police have confirmed that at least two bodies found in suitcases last week are children.
The shocking discovery came last week after a family bought the contents of an abandoned storage container and only opened the suitcases inside the storage unit when they arrived in Manurew, south Auckland last week.
In an update Thursday morning, Manukau District Crime Manager Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua warned the latest update “will be extremely disturbing news for the community.”
Vaaelua said initial post-mortem examinations of the bodies found the remains found in two suitcases were those of two primary school-age children.
“Initial indications are that these children may have been deceased for a number of years before they were found last week,” Vaaelua said in a statement obtained by The Daily Beast.
The children have yet to be publicly identified as formal identification procedures are ongoing and police confirm they are “not yet able to identify the children”.
They said once identification is complete, “our priority is to contact next of kin.”
Vaaelua said the nature of the discovery creates “some complexities for the investigation” considering the find in the storage unit.
Last week, the family took the cargo out of the storage unit and drove home for several hours, parked the contents in their yard and then began searching it a day later.
Police confirmed the children’s remains were discovered after the family returned the items from the camp to their address.
Scene investigations were also completed at both locations.
“We reiterate that the occupants of the Moncrieff Avenue property were not involved in her death,” Vaaelua said.
“They are understandably concerned about the discovery and have asked for privacy. We make sure there is support for them.”
When asked by The Daily Beast if there were any other bodies involved besides the two children, New Zealand police declined to comment on the matter.
At the time of the discovery, neighbors told Newshub that at least three hearses had turned up at the home and that they could smell decomposing bodies.
