What to know
The Houston Cougars are 1-5 against the Memphis Tigers as of November 2015, but they will have a chance to close the gap a bit on Friday. Houston and Memphis will face off against American Athletic at 9 p.m. ET at TDECU Stadium. The cougars should still stay high after a big win, while the Tigers will find their way back to the winning column.
A balanced attack helped Houston get past the Temple Owls at half-time on their way to victory this past Saturday. Houston was the clear winner with a 37-8 margin over Temple. The contest only ended at the end of the third round, by which time Houston had established an unequaled 24 advantage. RB Alton McCaskill continued his frenzied drop routine, pounding on two TDs and 129 yards on 21 carry.
The Cougar’s defense is also present, as it has collected three interceptions and one fumble. Those interceptions were spread throughout their defensive unit.
Meanwhile, the Tigers missed a second-half PAT kick against the East Carolina Pirates this past Saturday, and it’s back to haunt them. Memphis lost to East Carolina in extra time 30-29. QB Seth Henigan Good effort for the losing side as he went through three TDs and 233 yards in 26 attempts along with picking up 61 yards on the ground. Near the top of the reels is Henigan’s 75-yard TD bomb to WR Eddie Lewis in the second quarter.
Memphis’ defense is also a presence, as it puts the Pirates’ offensive line to shame by firing QB Holton Ahlers six times to lose a total of 30 yards. Heavy lifting performed by DL Wardalis Ducksworth and DE Jaylon Allen, each person gets 2.5 sacks.
Houston is the favorite team in this match, with an 8.5-point margin of victory. Odds players have seen things return to the Cougars, who are on 5-4 against the odds.
Houston is currently 9-1 while Memphis sits at 5-5. Two defensive stats to keep in mind as you watch: Houston is 156th nationally in terms of touches allowed, with 23 points for the season. The Tigers went through some struggles of their own as they stumbled on the 219th most touchdown game allowed nationally, having given up 20 of the season. Maybe one of these Achilles heels will get in the way of the losing team.
