Above Windows 11, Microsoft Edge is the default browser experience for navigating the internet, opening web links, viewing PDF files. However, you can change it and set Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your default browser.

In previous versions, once you installed your favorite browsing app, you got an option to switch and set it as default with one click, but this is no longer the case. . Microsoft is more aggressive on Windows 11 to prevent you from setting Chrome, Firefox or another browser as the default system. Change the default browser on Windows 11

To set Chrome or Firefox as the default browser on Windows 11, use these steps:

1. Open Setting on Windows 11.

2. Click Application.

3. Click Default Apps from the left side.

4. Selection Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, depending on the new default browser you want on Windows 11.

   

5. Click .htm protocol and select Still moving to set your preferred browser as the new browser.

6. Choose your new default browser (Chrome or Firefox) and click YES button.

   

7. Click .html protocol and select Still moving to set your preferred browser as the new browser.

8. Select the new default browser and click YES button.

9. Click HTTP protocol and select Still moving to set your preferred browser as the new browser.

10. Select the new default browser and click YES button.

11. Click HTTPS and select the Still Transfer option to set your preferred browser as the new browser.

12. Select the new default browser and click YES button.

13. (Optional) Click .pdf protocol and select Still moving to set your preferred browser as the new browser.

14. Select the new default browser and click YES button.

After you complete the steps, Chrome or Firefox will become the new default browser. However, it won’t be the default for everything. Things like web results using Windows Search and links from the Extensions dashboard will continue to open with Microsoft Edge using Bing.

While this guide is specific to Chrome and Firefox users, the same instructions should work with any web browser, including Opera, Safari, Brave, etc.

If you install Firefox outside of the Microsoft Store, the app will prompt you to set Firefox as the new default. When you click the button to toggle, the action will set Firefox as the new default for .HTM, .HTML, HTTP, and HTTPS file types. However, if you install browser from Microsoft Store, you won’t get the option.
