How to increase FPS in Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV may require a lot of your computer resources to provide a good game experience, especially in situations where you find yourself in crowded areas. For this reason, you may experience a drop in frame rates and not be able to enjoy your full potential.

Luckily, there are some simple tricks to improve your FPS and game stability. In general there are also ways to increase your frame rate in games, and these are the ways.

Adjust FPS options

You can first verify if the game’s FPS matches your monitor. For example, if your monitor can hit 144 FPS, you may not be able to load them in the game because the default limit will be set too low by default.

To verify if your game framerate is limited, go to System Configuration and scroll down to the Frame Rate category. You should have some predefined options: None, the frame rate of the monitor, half or quarter of it. For a 144 Hz display, the options will be 144 fps, 72 or 36.

However, it is best to choose 1/1 if your monitor can go higher. Setting it to none can make the game eat up so many resources that you won’t notice any difference in gameplay.

You can also select “Limit frame rate when client is idle” and “Limit FPS when away from keyboard”. Whether you are waiting in a long line or looking for instructions, there are many cases FFXIV while the game is open, but you’re doing something else, so it’s a useful option to limit the resources the game takes.

Survive in the crowd

When the areas are crowded, it can have a negative impact on your game experience. Whether you’re in agricultural areas like Bozja or Eureka, hunting, FATE, new quests, or simply strolling through Limsa’s Plaza, it can be frustrating to find your screen cluttered with brands response and reduce the frame rate because of this.

There is a very simple trick to survive in the crowd FFXIV. Go to your Character Configuration (not System), go to Control Settings, Character tab and scroll down. In the “Battle Effect Settings” section, tick “Show Restricted” instead of “Show All” under Other.

It will make most of the combat effects from other players disappear. If you want to see it but don’t want your screen to be cluttered with it, continue Partying at “Show All” to only see the effects of your allies (up to seven players).

Another solution is to limit the number of characters displayed in one place. It can be done in System Configuration. Go to the More Settings icon and under the “Display Limits” section. You can limit the number of Characters and Objects so your setup can display fewer items and avoid FPS drops. Go into Limsa Plaza and tune it to see how you want to limit it and how it enhances your performance.

Adjusting graphics settings

If your setup can only run FFXIV, it might be a good idea if you sacrifice a bit of graphics quality for more performance. But even with the recent setup, some of the graphics options are resource-hungry without providing much tangible improvement.

Here are options you can tweak to improve your game’s performance without sacrificing too much. Go to your System Configuration, select the Graphics Settings icon and adjust some settings there.

  • overview
    • Turn off wet surface effect
    • Turn off displaying objects when not visible
    • Using low-detail models on distant objects
    • Set Grass Quality, Parallax Aberration, Tessellation, Glare and Map Resolution to low
  • Shadows
    • Turn them all off if you need more FPS
  • Effect
    • Minimize the space around the screen. The background environment looks worse, but it also consumes a lot of resources.

In FFXIV, reducing those graphics options won’t have much of an impact on the overall quality of the game while also improving performance by almost 15%, so it’s worth a shot. You can also choose the Standard (Laptop) preset, which is the lowest setting, and adjust your preferences in turn to see which setting is worth increasing.

If you have an Nvidia graphics card, you can compensate by choosing a lower graphics setting by activating the game filter in the game. You won’t experience much loss in performance, but the game will look much better. Filters can modify the image to your liking, such as enhancing its sharpness and contrast.
