Soft sand can only be obtained by catching a sand swipe in Pokémon LeafGreen. Sandslash cannot be caught in the wild in Pokémon FireRed, so the only way to get Soft Sand in FireRed is to trade it in from a copy of Pokémon LeafGreen.
Wild Sand Slam has a 5% chance to wield an item made of soft sand.
Once you’ve caught a wild Sandslash, you can check it out in your party or on your PC to see if it’s carrying any soft sand.
Note: Sandshrew, unlike his evolved form, does not wear soft sand.
Get soft sand
Soft Sand is only available in Pokémon LeafGreen, of course, but can be purchased in FireRed if you have a copy of LeafGreen to trade.
If you have Pokémon LeafGreen
If you have Pokémon LeafGreen, all you have to do is catch a few Sandslash and see if they hold the Soft Sand or not.
Wild Sand Slam has a 5% chance to hold a soft sand.
Unfortunately, Wild Sandslash also have an encounter rate of around 5% and are only available on Route 23 and Victory Road.
So it will probably take a few tries before you actually get your held item.
When Sandslash is holding a soft sand, you’ll see the icon next to it in your party.
If Sandslash goes to your PC instead, you can hover over it to see if it contains the soft sand.
I recommend saving a few open party slots before searching for Sandslash so you can quickly check whether or not you have the soft sand without having to go all the way to a PC.
If you have Pokemon FireRed
If you have Pokémon FireRed, you cannot catch a Sandslash in the wild. This makes it much more difficult to get a soft sand.
You have to catch a wild sandslash in a LeafGreen version of the game and get the soft sand out of it.
Once you have the Soft Sand, you can give it to any Pokemon and pass that Pokemon into your Pokemon FireRed game via the top floor of the Pokemon Center.
Sandslash Locations (Pokémon LeafGreen)
Sandslash doesn’t appear until later in the game, once you’re ready to head down Victory Road. This is because it is a final evolution and is around level 45 in the wild.
Unfortunately, there is no way to get Soft Sand early in the game. Sand shrews don’t carry soft sand, so you just have to be patient until you can reach one of the later routes.
|route||Even||encounter opportunity||Chance for soft sand|
|Victory Street 1F||44||5%||5%|
|Victory Street 2F||46||5%||5%|
|Victory Street 3F||44||5%||5%|
Remember that Sandslash only appears in Pokémon LeafGreen. If you’re playing on FireRed, please don’t waste an hour looking for Sandslash and questioning your luck and sanity like I did.
What is soft sand?
Soft Sand is an item that can be given to a Pokémon to boost its Ground-type attacks by 10%. It’s a very useful item for competitive Pokémon and for making your Ground Pokémon as strong as possible.
Most of the time, items like soft sand aren’t necessary in the story.
For the endgame, however, when you’re taking on challenges like the Trainer Tower, you want every advantage you can get.
If you have a Ground Pokemon, consider whether you want that Pokemon to be a tank or a damage dealer. If you choose the latter, Soft Sand is the best product. It will make moves like Earthquake absolutely devastating to your opponents.
