How to get Poliwag and its evolutions in Pokémon FRLG – FandomSpot

Poliwag can be caught in many locations while fishing with the Good Rod or the Super Rod (all covered in detail below). Some of the best spots are Viridian City, the Safari Zone (Good Rod only), and Route 6.

Sources of supply for Poliwag

Poliwag can only be found by fishing, so you’ll need to get yourself a good rod or super rod before going on a Poliwag hunt.

  • The good staff is located in Fuchsia City, in the house to the right of the keeper’s house
  • The super rod located in the house in the middle of Route 12

Once you have your fishing pole there are a number of places where you can fish a Poliwag.

If you have the good rod:

location levels encounter rate
berry forest 5 – 15 20%
Cape Brink 5 – 15 60%
Cerulean Cave (1F, B1F) 5 – 15 60%
Four Island 5 – 15 60%
Fuchsia city 5 – 15 20%
Icefall Cave 5 – 15 60%
route 22 5 – 15 60%
route 23 5 – 15 60%
route 25 5 – 15 60%
way 6 5 – 15 60%
valley of ruins 5 – 15 60%
Safari Zone 5 – 15 20%
City of Viridian 5 – 15 60%

If you have the good staff, you will find Poliwag at lower level. However, you also have a higher chance of finding Poliwag.

If you use the super rod, you can still find Poliwag, but you’ll be more likely to fish stronger Pokemon.

The table above shows every location with Poliwag, but if you want my favorite places then go to:

  • way 6
  • Safari Zone (any area)
  • City of Viridian

These locations are available in the early game, which you’re probably still in if you’re using the Good Rod. Plus, they’re super easy to get to and packed to the brim with Poliwag.

If you have the super rod:

location levels encounter rate
Cape Brink 15 – 25 40%
Cerulean Cave (1F, B1F) 15 – 25 40%
Four Island 15 – 25 40%
Icefall Cave 15 – 25 40%
route 22 15 – 25 40%
route 23 15 – 25 40%
route 25 15 – 25 40%
way 6 15 – 25 40%
valley of ruins 15 – 25 40%
City of Viridian 15 – 25 40%

As you can see, Poliwag is less likely to be caught and there are fewer locations available for it when using the Super Rod.

I would still recommend only fishing in Viridian City or on Route 6 as these locations are very easy to get to although the encounter rate doesn’t change between locations.

Where to buy Poliwhirl

If you want to evolve your Poliwag into Poliwhirl, you can train it until it reaches level 25.

If you want to catch Poliwhirl, the good news is that it can be found in many of the same places that Poliwag can be found.

The bad news is that you can only catch Poliwhirl with a super rod.

Best Places to Catch Poliwhirl (Using Super Rod)

location Even encounter rate
City of Viridian 20 – 30 40%
way 6 20 – 30 40%
route 22 20 – 30 40%

All of these locations are found very early in the game. Using the Super Rod in Viridian City, I found about 5 Poliwhirls in a row before hitting a puny Poliwag, so this is by far my favorite spot.

Where do you get Poliwrath?

Poliwrath after being evolved from a Poli Swirl with a Water Stone

Poliwrath can only be obtained by evolving with the Water Stone. You cannot find Poliwrath in the wild.

To obtain Poliwrath:

  1. Catch a Poliwhirl (or evolve Poliwag at level 25)
  2. Buy a water stone on the 4th floor of the Celadon department store
  3. Use the water stone on Poliwhirl

There are no level requirements to use the Water Stone, so you can get a Poliwrath once you have a Poliwhirl.
