How to defeat Giovanni (August 2022)

A new monthly rotation is here Pokemon GO and while there are still a few weeks left of the season of Go, there are many big changes coaches need to be aware of. In addition to a pretty exciting lineup of August 2022 events in the mobile AR game, there are also some changes to Team GO Rocket lineups to consider.
Trainers who enjoy fighting have the opportunity to face off against the leaders of Team GO Rocket again this month Pokemon GO, but some of the leaders of the enemy factions are changing their rosters to keep the trainers on their toes. The big villain Giovanni will bring the same Legendary Shadow to the fight that appeared in July, but Trainers might still want to refresh the best counters in time.
Once players have put all the work into earning a Giovanni encounter, they should take the time to prepare for the fight before it begins so they don’t waste resources. The exact lineup is always a bit random, but players can learn enough in advance to prepare for the most diverse roster to deal with the current lineup. Be sure to consider whether it might be worth burning some Elite TMs in your head to find ideal move sets before battle.
Giovanni August 2022 Lineup
Persian
Nidoking or Rhyperior or Machamp
Shadow Latios
Persian counters
As always, Giovanni will most likely start the fight with Persian. This Pokémon is Normal-type, and players in Pokémon GO can usually defeat it very easily with a respectable Fighting-type counter.
- Lucario – Counter/Aura Sphere or Power-Up Punch
- Conkeldurr – Counter/Dynamic Strike
- Machamp – Counter/Cross Chop or Dynamic Punch
- Rhyperior – Mud Strike/Stone Edge
- Tyranitar – Smack Down/Crunch
- Hariyama – Counter/Dynamic Strike
Nidoking Counter
Nidoking has a chance to appear in the second slot. This Team Rocket favorite is a dual Poison and Ground type, meaning players can count on Ground, Water, Psycho, and Ice types for their best counter options.
- Kyogre – Waterfall/Hydropump
- Hoopa (Unbound) – Confusion/Psychic Blast
- Mamoswine – Mud Strike/Avalanche
- Rhyperior – Mud Strike/Earthquake
- Swampert – Water Pistol/Hydro Cannon
- Mewtwo – Confusion or Psycho Cut/Psystrike
- Alakazam – Confusion/Human
Machamp counter
The third option for Giovanni’s second fighter is Machamp. This Gen 1 battle type is nothing new to experienced players and can be defeated with a carefully chosen Flying, Psychic, or Fairy-type counter strategy.
- Mewtwo – Confusion or Psycho Cut/Psystrike
- Alakazam – Confusion/Human
- Hoopa (Unbound) – Confusion/Psychic Blast
- Moltres – Wing Attack/Sky Attack
- Rayquaza – Air Slash/Hurricane
- Deoxys – Zen Headbutt/Psycho Boost or Zap Cannon
Shadow Latios Counter
The final spot is once again reserved for a Shadow Legendary that players can use to earn an encounter if they manage to survive the fight. Shadow Latios is back in the spotlight following its release in July, which means players who fought last month should be prepared to fight with their respective Bug, Dark, Dragon, Faerie, Ghost, or Ice counters should.
- Gengar – Shadow Claw/Shadow Ball
- Dialga – Dragon’s Breath/Draco Meteor
- Garchomp – Dragon Tail/Outrage
- Hydreigon – Dragon’s Breath/Brutal Sweep
- Salamence – Dragon Tail/Outrage
That should be pretty much everything Trainers need to know to head into the big fight this month. Keep in mind that players sometimes treat the first attempt as information gathering and need to jump right back in after an early loss with some additional information.
