Since switching to the free-to-play model in December 2018, CS GO attracted hundreds of thousands of new players, jumping from a peak of 546,031 players to 746,548 players in just one month. That number continued to grow in the months and years that followed.

In March 2020, CS GO hit the one million player mark for the first time. The following month, the game attracted an average player count of 857,604, peaking at 1,305,714 concurrent players, according to Steam Charts. At that time, the US and many countries around the world imposed lockdown measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

In January 2022the game peaked with 991,625 concurrent players — up from 950,586 last month.
