On April 19, 1927, actress Mae West pulled as much as Welfare Island, now often called Roosevelt Island, at the back of a limo. She was sharply dressed right down to her silk underwear and carrying a bouquet of white roses. When she stepped out of the limo, she smiled for the ready photographers…after which checked into the ladies’s jail to start serving a 10-day sentence.
