Hogwarts Legacy will not include microtransactions

Upcoming Harry Potter RPG, Hogwarts Legacy, there will be no microtransactions. Following the Game’s State of Play on Thursday (March 17), community manager Chandler Wood quashed any fan concerns:

“We saw this question come up and wanted to set the record right away. There are no microtransactions in the Hogwarts Legacy,” Wood said on his personal Twitter account.

This news comes after the impressive gameplay of Hogwarts Legacy debuted on PlayStation State of Play. It has been confirmed that players can customize their wizard once they enter Hogwarts as a fifth year student. The 2022 public holiday has been announced by the developers; September seems to be the most likely date to tie in with the game’s book counterpart. Hogwarts Legacy will be released for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X & S, Xbox One and PC. WB has also confirmed plans to release the game on the Nintendo Switch, but no date has been announced yet.

In recent years, there has been a decline in microtransactions, especially loot boxes. In October 2020, EA was fined €10 million by the Dutch district court for violating the country’s Betting and Games Act (via GamesIndustry.biz). The court ruled due to the inclusion of loot boxes in FIFA Ultimate Team. However, earlier this month, EA successfully overturned the fine after a court ruled that the issuer had not violated the country’s gambling rules.

Recently learn by researchers at the Universities of Plymouth and the University of Wolverhampton have found that loot crates have “a gambling-like structure and mentality”. Furthermore, it detects children opening these so-called loot boxes.
